ABOUT ME

I am a glass artist Elona Jagelavičienė, the founder of ELONAGLASS glass workshop with Vilnius Institute of Art (now Vilnius Academy of Art) glass artist diploma.

My pieces of work are little sculptural ideas materialised in glass. Glass is a special material which binds fragility, transparency and lightness. My art usually follows a simple form, without any unnecessary details.

Glass - like angels cannot live without light

When a couple of decades ago I created my first angels, I felt that Lithuanians feel familiar and like them. Nowadays they are no longer associated as religious symbols but more as  symbols of light, good, care, protection and hope, a beautiful wish in an art form.

Even though an angel is one of the most well-known symbols of Christianity tradition, it takes different position in various European countries. Exclusively Scandinavians, Russians and the Polish appreciate and like this symbol, therefore, a lot of angels have already “flown” to these countries.

Which colour pieces of glass are the most likable? Of course, whites and transparent: as an angel is a being of light. Though, I have made dark red or even black angels as special decorations for individual requests. One of the black angels has a special effect: the centre of the figure is a little bit more transparent and seems as a beating life artery in bright red background body…

Ethno motives -  on the mainstream: still or again?

I notice that in the field of little plastic the need of the works of ethnographical motives has revived.

People nowadays try again to discover and “to tame” our old well-known folklore symbolism of Lithuanian little crosses, little suns, plants and birds.

It is not easy at once to embody our old symbols into glass. After all, not every folklore “wooden” symbol is possible to revive in a piece of glass.

It is important to make an old symbol to speak, to mean something for today people, it should be recognisable; on the other hand, the piece itself should be stable, not too fragile.

My works reach homes not only as fine decorations - they are live, heart-warming pieces of art, full of personal creativity and relevant old symbols.

I am a glass artist Elona Jagelavičienė. I graduated Kauno J. Naujalis secondary art school as a sculptor in 1980. Afterwards, I studied at Vilnius Institute of Art and acquired glass artist diploma.
